The novel I read was Roll of Thunder Here My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. This book was a really good book, it was full of surprises! First you think something is going to happen but a different thing happens instead. The book was about black and white people. This story is about the Logan family. They are African American. In their family there is Cassie, Mama, Papa, Big Ma, Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man. They struggle a lot though out the book. Mama loses her job because the whites didn?t think that she was teaching them true things. All the Logan kids skip lunch to dig a big hole. They dug the hole because the bus driver of the white people gets them all muddy. You see, the white people got to ride the bus but, the African American kids aren?t allowed. You have to read the book to find out what happens.
I would have to say my favorite part is when Cassie goes to Strawberry with her Big Ma. (Her big ma is her grandma) While her Big Ma goes into a store she (and two boys one being her brother) got to another store to purchase some groceries. There she gets lippy and she gets in trouble with a white girl named, Lillian Jean. The outstanding details to describe the scene are so real! My favorite character was Cassie who is also the narrator. She reminds me of myself because she has an attitude. She also isn?t afraid to speak her mind. There was one character named Stacey who changed throughout the story. At one point he is a sweet older brother, and at another he has an attitude just like Cassie. While reading this book, I was sad because, the African Americans were treated disrespectfully. I was also excited because I could never wait to find out what happened next!
I would recommend this book to anyone from the ages ten to fourteen because of some of the language. I think people would like this book if they like drama stories. I also think that if you like historical fiction you would enjoy this book.
