This book is about WWII, German soldiers taking over the Jews, and two little girls trying to hide from the German soldiers. The main character was Annemarie Johansen.
One event in this book was when Annemarie?s mother was on a mission to help some Jews. This book kept me guessing what would happen next. The lesson to be learned in this story is that some times you have to lie to survive. Will the characters survive and what are they lying about? You will have to read to find out.
I liked this book because it always got me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. My favorite part of this book was when Mama pretended that there had been a death just so mama and papa can get some clothes for a baby.
The character I liked the best was Annemarie because she was always brave and showed Ellen around. My mother is like Annemarie because she always helps me out and when I got scared about the house fire, she showed me there was nothing to fear. This book reminds me of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry because the characters in both books have to overcome discrimination and try to survive in a world of hate.
I would recommend this book because it was very suspenseful. I would recommend this book to the ages 9 or older because it could get a little confusing to younger kids. If you like suspense then this book is for you.
